Honduras wins Central American duel to Guatemala

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, June 23, 2018.- Honduras prevailed over Guatemala 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 26-24) in a Central American duel for seventh place at the Women’s NORCECA U20 Continental Championship in Aguascalientes, México.

Honduras finishes seventh with 1-4 record; Guatemala seals with 0-5.

Honduras controlled Guatemala easily in the first two sets. Guatemala regrouped and held 1a 16-14 margin in the third set but Honduras finished in a tight 26-24 with strong kills and mostly serves.

Honduras dominated every aspect of the game, with huge advantage in serves 8-0, 33-27 in kills and 5-1 in blocking. Honduras scored on 30 opponent errors and committed 23.

Middle Blocker Josselyn Waterhouse of Honduras: “In addition to thank God for today’s victory, our receiving and passing have improved, that’s why he had opportunity to attack”.

Osiel Vásquez head coach of Honduras: “Our expectation was to finish in straight sets. Guatemala stabilized their receiving and that’s why in the third set things got difficult. There is much too improve to play at a Continental level, the most important thing is to have more wing spikers, like Nathaly Perez”.

Carmen Elisa Gómez captain of Guatemala: “This was a learning experience; we have many weaknesses, mostly our attitude. Today with better attitude we held advantage in the third set”.

William Fernández head coach of Guatemala: “This was expected. We held advantage in the third but without resources there isn’t much to do; we need more offense”.
