Cuba overcomes Argentina in Pool A
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 1, 2011 – Cuba recovered from losing
the first set to defeat Argentina 3-1 (27-29, 25-18, 25-13,
25-20) in the first match of Pool A of the 10th
Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup at Colegio de Bachilleres
Gymnasium on Friday.
Cuba out-blocked Argentina 17-5 while the defeated side had the
advantage in serving aces 6-2.
Kenia Carcaces and Yusidey Silie topped Cuba with 18 and 17
points respectively while Wilma Salas and Yanelis Santos charted
12 and 10. Georgina Pinedo led Argentina with 18 points and
Daniela Gildenberger added 12.
“Despite the difficulties we are happy with the victory,” Cuba’s
captain Yusidey Silie said. “It was a game of up and downs for
us. I hope our game will improve in the upcoming matches.”
“The first matches are always tough,” said Cuban coach Juan
Carlos Gala. “Argentina always plays good against us. We have a
young team with 3 or 4 regulars in the junior age but with some
experience. I want to congratulate Argentina for their
performance.”
Georgina Pinedo captain of Argentina said: “I think it was a
positive game for us. It is a good start for us and our
performance is a booster and gives us confidence for the next
matches.”
Horacio Bastit, coach of Argentina: “We had the illusion after
winning the first set. Obviously we knew the kind of rival we
were facing. The power at the net was the difference with Cuba
scoring with 17 blocks. As soon as our serves slowed down they
were able to receive better and prepare their attack.” |
