USA defeats Peru in straight sets

 

CIUDAD JUAREZ, México, July 1, 2011. – USA defeated Peru in straight sets (25-20, 25-14, 25-14) in their first match of the X Women´s Pan American Cup at Universidad Autonoma Ciudad Juarez Gym on Friday.

 

Peru gave USA a hard time in the first set but after making some adjustments, the Americans prevailed without complications.

 

Nicole Fawcett with 11 points and Foluke Akinradewo with 10, were the best scorers for USA, while Mirtha Uribe with 8 points was the best on the Peruvian side.

 

Jennifer Tamas, USA captain said: “I’m proud of my team it was difficult to adjust to the air in the gym, but we just had to stick to the basics: serve and pass, and it all went well.” 

 

For Peru, Diana Soto recognized that her team has many deficiencies and there were things that didn´t turn out right, “but we had pretty good things to show proving we’re capable of more”, she said.

 

As for USA coach Hugh McCutcheon he expressed that at this high-level tournaments margins in scores are thin, “it was no surprise that Peru gave us challenge, but we were more consistent”.
