Argentina enters the quarterfinal phase
CIUDAD JUAREZ; Mexico, July 5, 2011 – Argentina reached the
quarterfinal round of the Women’s Pan American Cup following a
3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14) victory over hosts Mexico in front of
a full house at Colegio de Bachilleres Gymnasium on Tuesday
night.
The Argentineans finished third in Pool A with a 3-2 win-loss
record while Mexico concluded in fifth position with a 1-4 mark.
Georgina Pinedo and Emilce Sosa led Argentina with 15 and 13
points respectively while Lucia Fresco charted nine. Karla Sainz
topped Mexico with 12 points.
“We are a little tired after playing five games in five days,”
Pinedo said. “It was an important victory for us playing against
an aggressive Mexican team and against the huge local crowd.”
“We need to learn how to close the sets,” Mexico’s captain
Martha Revuelta said. “We were leading late in the second but
couldn’t score in the key moments. We need to keep working.”
“We had a positive balance after the pool play since we finished
third and still have the chance to go to the Grand Prix,”
Argentinean Horacio Bastit said. “Mexico battled hard and is a
team with fighting spirit, good attitude and good defense.”
“We had high expectations about this match but we didn’t have
the extra on the tank,” Mexican Mario Herrera commented. “Our
team doesn’t have the necessary international experience. We
need to play more.” |
