Puerto Rico wins coming from behind
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 9, 2011. – Puerto Rico scored an
exciting coming from behind victory over Argentina 23-25, 21-25,
25-23, 25-21, 15-13 to earn the fifth place at the 10th
Pan American Women’s Volleyball Cup 2011.
A thrilling match that began with a 2-0 margin in favor of
Argentina saw Puerto Rico climbing back to take the victory in a
close tie-breaker.
Aury Cruz commanded Puerto Rico’s victory with 27 points, while
Amanda Vasquez made her contribution with 11. For the defeated
side, Emilse Sosa scored 18 and Georgina Pinedo 16 points.
“Both teams are warriors, our substitute players added the extra
ingredient that was missing, making things complicated for our
opponent, proving that it was anybody’s game,” Puerto Rico’s
Vilmarie Mojica said.
Argentina’s Georgina Pinedo expressed: “First congratulations to
Puerto Rico; analyzing the match, Argentina was strong down the
middle during the first sets but our abilities weren’t enough.”
“Our reserve players had much more desire to win and did a
splendid job,” Puerto Rican coach David Aleman stated. “This has
been a wonderful Cup and our main objective was achieved, I
believe anyone could have won today.”
Argentinean Horacio Bastit commented: “It is very exciting to
play in front of full stadiums, despite losing today we take a
positive outcome, our qualification to the World FIVB Grand Prix
and ending among the top six.” |
