MIAMI, Florida, July 2, 2009.- Canada prevailed
in a tough five-set battle with Mexico advancing
to the 5-8 positions round of the Eighth Women’s
Pan American Cup being held at University of
Miami’s BankUnited Center. The match lasted 1
hour and 49 minutes and the score was 23-25,
25-14, 25-17, 20-25, 15-12.
The loss dropped Mexico to a match for the ninth
position on Friday against the loser of the
Costa Rica vs. Trinidad and Tobago later on
Thursday.
Captain Tammy Mahon produced 18 points for
Canada, including three blocks, and Tifanny
Dodds added 17. Sherline Holness, who also had
three blocks, finished with 15 points and Tonya
Mokelki added two blocks among her 14 points.
Migdalel Ruiz, the captain of Mexico, paced her
team with a match-high 20 points and Martha
Revuelta and Olivia Meza scored 18 and 16
respectively.
Canada outscored its opponents 11-5 in the
blocking category which was a key for the
definition of the match.
“We had a slow start and Mexico played very well
as we struggled in the first set,” said Arnd
Ludwig, the Canadian coach. “Our passing
improved in the second and third sets and then
we were lucky in the tie-breaker.”
“I am satisfied with the reaction of my team
today,” said Samuel Cibrian, the coach of
Mexico. “Today’s team was different than
yesterday against Costa Rica. Canada is a good
team with very strong middle blockers.”
