Canada earned seventh place over Costa Rica

MIAMI, Florida, July 4, 2009.- Canada swept Costa Rica 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 in the seventh place match of the Eighth Women’s Pan American Cup, a qualifier to next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix being held at the University of Miami.

The taller Canadians out-blocked their opponents 13-6 while the sides finished tied 5-5 in the aces category.

Tiffany Dodds topped Canada with 16 points including three blocks and one ace, and Nadine Alphonse totaled five blocks among her 10 points for the match. Brittney Page and Tammy Mahon each contributed six tallies.

Verania Willis was the Costa Rica’s top attacker with 11 points, all attacks, and Angela Willis added 8 points including three blocks and three aces.

“I have been with the team for seven weeks and the tournament gave me the opportunity to know more my players,” said Arnd Ludwig, the coach of Canada. “Also was a chance to prepare for our next goal which is a World Championship qualifier in Puerto Rico.”

“Every year the Costa Rica team comes better and better,” said Tammy Mahon, the captain of Canada. “We knew we had to be ready for them and our blocking earned us some points.”

“Canada dominated the game at the net and we couldn’t do anything against them,” said Braulio Godinez, the coach of Costa Rica. “We didn’t have the ability to avoid their blocking”.

“Our team didn’t show the fighting spirit, the attitude and our mistakes gave them some points,” said Verania Willis, the captain of Costa Rica. “Their blocking was very good and they seemed well positioned all the time.”
