Panama overcomes Honduras in five thrilling sets

CIUDAD PANAMA, Panama, June 22, 2011 – Panama defeated Honduras in a thrilling five-setter by score of 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 15-4 in the nightcap of the opening day at the U-21 Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup on Wednesday.

Manuel Gomez scored 21 points to lead the winning cause while Otto Otton and Captain Pablo Quiel added 13 and 10 respectively. Honduras’ Kristian Sabio topped the scores of his side with 14 tallies followed by Jose Vasquez and Alex Padilla with 11 and 10.

Hondurans and Panamanians played a very intense seesaw match with the home side prevailing in the fourth set before dominating the tie-breaker when they took advantage of the opponent’s errors.

Panama’s Coach Elliott Clark was satisfied with the final outcome of the well fought match even though his team only has been training 15 days while captain Quiel admitted they didn’t play well but showed enough courage at the end.

Honduras’s Coach Alex Godoy and the Captain Vasquez stated that despite the loss their team gained in experience battling even against a local team with a side made up mostly by players of 17 and 18 years-old preparing for the Central American tournament of the age-category to be played next August.
