Mexico overcomes Dominican Republic in five sets
PANAMA CITY, Panama, June 27, 2011 – Mexico scored a
come-from-behind five-set victory over Dominican Republic to
take fifth place in the U-21 Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup.
The scores were 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-8.
Both teams scored with 9 blocks and the Dominicans had a 10-8
margin in serving aces. The difference resided in the 35 errors
by the defeated side compared to 28 by the winners.
Jose Mendoza led Mexico with 13 points followed by Guerson
Revuelta and Juan Revuelta with 12 apiece and Nestor Orellana
who charted 10.
Dominican Anaury Burgos had a tournament-high 33 points but
could not prevent the defeat. Henry Tapia finished with 15 and
Kelvyn Campechano and Ricardo Rijo scored 11 and 10
respectively.
Francisco Javier Jim, coach of Mexico, was satisfied with the
job made by his team while captain Juan Revueltas remarked on
the offensive game of Mexico.
Dominican coach Osiel Vásquez was satisfied because his players
gave all they had and also got the experience during the
tournament.
Captain Kelvyn Campechano pointed out on the errors as the
reason for the loss but he also is confident of the future of
the team and of the new players since some from this group will
go to the senior selection.
