Costa Rica sweeps Mexico

MIAMI, Florida, June 30, 2009.- Costa Rica downed Mexico in a tight three-set match 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 to finish in fourth place of Pool A in the Eighth Women’s Pan American Cup held at BankUnited Center of University of Miami.

Costa Rica ends Pool A with a 2-3 win-loss record and meets Trinidad & Tobago on July 1. Meanwhile Mexico falls to 1-4 and fifth place on Pool A and next plays against Canada on Thursday.

Costa Rican captain Verania Willis hammered 14 kills with three blocks and two aces en route to a 19 points night. Karen Cope Charles contributed 11 points, eleven via attacks, and Paola Ramirez added nine.

Captain Migdalel Ruiz led Mexico with 15 points, including 14 attacks, and Martha Revuelta added nine points.

“I think both teams are very similar and the score of each set was very close,” said Braulio Godinez, the Costa Rican coach. “The girls were very concentrated. I think it was the concentration that gave us today’s result.”

“We played a very bad match today, our worst match of the Pan American Cup,” said Samuel Cibrian, the Mexican coach. “Costa Rica took advantage of our mistakes, and I congratulate them in their efforts.”
