Long Day for Virgen and Ontiveros
HUIXQUILUCAN, Mexico, June 7, 2014 - Juan Virgen and Lombardo
Ontiveros of Mexico 1, had a very long day when closing the
pools phase, but it got it’s worth.
Virgen and Ontiveros defeated Simon Fecteau Boutin and James
Battiston of Canada 2 in quarterfinals 21-12 and 21-18.
However a couple of hours before, they played longest set of
round at Bosque Real. It was the third set in their match
William Montgomery and Slick Stafford of USA2. A total of 58
points were scored, 30 by the Mexicans, 28 by the Americans.
Both teams qualified to the quarterfinals, but Stafford and
Montgomery had another difficult checkpoint against the 2008
Olympic Champion, Todd Rogers, and his partner Theodore Brunner.
The Americans’ battle lasted other three sets. Montgomery and
Stafford were so close to give a surprise, but Rogers’
experience helped him and Brunner to overcome and win 21-16,
20-22 and 15-12 to advance to semifinals.
Meanwhile, bronze medal winners of the Manzanillo Stop, Sam
Schachter and Josh Binstock, played another three setter in the
quarterfinals. The members of Canada 1 recovered from an adverse
first set against Ulises Ontiveros and Salvador Frias of Mexico
2 and won 18-21, 21-15 and 15-6.
The canadians will reach their second semifinal in one week,
while Cubans Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez defeated Juan
Revuelta and Ricardo Galindo to get into the best four male
teams of the stop. Scores were 21-13 and 21-15.
Final day Matches of both genders will be broadcasted on Sunday
by TDN, Televisa Deportes Network whose signal is available in
