Maurissa Williams leads Belize to subdue Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, August 13, 2014- The effectiveness of Maurissa Williams led Belize to subdue host Honduras 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) in the conclusion of the II Women’s U-23 AFECAVOL Central American Championship at Jorge A. Galeano Gymnasium in Tegucigalpa.

Belizean Maurissa Williams scored a tournament-high of 27 points to lead all scorers in Belize’s surprising victory over the home team. Tichele Solis also contributed with the win with 21 points. The top scorer for Honduras was outside hitter Lesby Midence with 15 points.

Both squads showed intensity in front of more than six hundred spectators in the closing match of the tournament. It was a one on one battle with Belize taking the win with powerful kills. Honduras concludes with a 2-4 win-loss record and fourteen points, Belize with the same record finishes with ten points.

Belize held a 50-30 advantage in kills and a 10-6 advantage in the blocking category; both teams scored five service points.

“It feels great to close with a win” said captain Tichele Solis. “We didn’t want to wait until getting back to home to apply everything we’ve learned here and decided to close big, leaving all we got in the court” she concluded.

Honduras’ captain Eloisa Sarmiento indicated “our attackers were more effective in the second set, but we had difficulties with our passing and our defense; Belize played with full energy while we came out short”.

“I am more satisfied, the team played together and we were prepared for Honduras to defend well but we weakened them with our attackers who did a great job” said coach Jose Reyes.

Coach Marco Tejada made a final evaluation of his team by saying “the team had to many ups and downs, we need more mental disposition, more decision and more braveness. Maurissa Williams was too much for us, she is a splendid attacker. As this category is the base of our senior team we need to look for players with more height to have better results to reduce our other deficiencies”.
