Argentina secures first place in Pool C of Men’s Pan Am Cup

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 25, 2010 – Argentina scored a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-22) victory over Venezuela on Tuesday and secured first place of Pool C in the Men’s Pan American Cup with a 2-0 record.

The Argentineans, who out matched their rivals in blocking 11-1, had Federico Pereyra and Mariano Guistiniano as best offensive weapons with 13 and 12 points respectively. Jose Martinez recorded 8 points for the defeated side.

“We played very well for the first two sets and then committed many unforced errors in the third,” Argentinean Coach Alejandro Grossi said during the press conference after the match. “Luckily we recovered on time to close the match.”

“During the first two sets we played solid and fundamental volleyball,” Argentina’s captain Demien González said. “In the third set we failed many serves and Venezuela complicated things for us.”

“The technical difference between the two teams is very big,” Venezuela’s Coach Ivan Nieto commented. “Argentina’s serves and reception were the keys.”

“The experience of Argentina gave them the win,” Venezuelan captain Carlos Paez said. “We are here to learn and to improve our technical level.”
