SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 25, 2010 – USA edged Mexico in a Pool B sensational five-setter to cap the second day of action in the Fifth Men’s Pan American Cup. The score was 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 26-28, 15-9. The Americans and Puerto Ricans will decide the group winner on Wednesday.

Dean Bittner and Robert Tarr compiled 29 and 20 points for USA and Jayson Jablonski and David Smith contributed 17 and 13 respectively. Mexican Ivan Contreras charted 27 points and Jesus Rangel chipped in 17.

“Mexico battled as hard as I have ever seen,” Richard McLaughlin, the USA coach said. “This is a young team and we look forward to continue improving with the tournament. The competition is very even from one to nine.”

“We had to scratch and fight for the victory,” Tyler Hillebrand, the USA Captain said. “We had to play our best against these guys.”

“I am a little frustrated because we had the chance to win but in the fifth set we made mistakes with our attacks,” Mexican Jorge Azair said. “But I am satisfied with the composure my young players kept against a big opponent like United States.”
