Canada advances to quarterfinals in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 26, 2010 – Canada booked a spot in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Pan American Cup following its 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-14) victory over Colombia on Wednesday at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.

The young Colombian team battled equally with the more experienced Canadians during the first set but the North Americans dominated the rest of the way.

Left-hander Dallas Soonias led Canada with 14 points, while Toontje van Lankvelt and Fred Winters contributed 9 and 8 points respectively. Alexander Moreno topped Colombia with 10 points and Ronald Jimenez, Adonis Herrera and Faver Rivas each charted 7 tallies.

“We are starting our international season and playing these games will help us to put things together,” Canadian Coach Glenn Hoag said during the press conference after the match. “Colombia played well for a set and a half and then we started to block a little bit better. As I said before this is the start of our preparation for the World Championship and teams here have very good level”.

“They outclassed us both technically and physically and clearly they deserved the victory,” Argentinean coach of Colombia Horacio Dileo said.
