USA advances to gold medal match of Men’s Pan Am Cup

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 28, 2010 – USA advanced to the gold medal match of the Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup following a hard-fought 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-18) victory against Brazil on Friday night. The Americans will be trying for their fourth overall title and third in a row.

Carson Clark and Jayson Jablonski shared the top of the winning offensive effort with 13 points apiece while Robert Tarr and David Smith each contributed 11 tallies. Brazilians Rogerio Nogueira and Renan Buiati each charted 11 points.

“The first two sets could have gone either way and perhaps we play the match again and the result is the reverse,” American Coach Richard McLaughlin said during the press conference after the match. “We somehow weathered the storm in the first two sets but this Brazilians guys really can block and have a great future. We served very well and the key was turning around the second set.”

“The United States team had a very fast offense today and also a fast defense touching a lot of balls,” Brazilian Coach Rubinho Leonaldo said. “We had a lot of problems with our reception but above all there was a beautiful game played by USA.”
