Canada finishes in fifth place of Men’s Pan Am Cup

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 29, 2010 – Canada scored a straight sets victory over Dominican Republic 25-15, 28-26, 25-10 in the match for the fifth position of the Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup on Saturday.

Nicholas Cundy and Gavin Schmitt were the best scorers of Canada with 14 points apiece and Fred Winters contributed 10. Dominican Jose Caceres topped the defeated side with 10 points.

“The tournament was a good chance to see our players as we start the preparation for the World Championship,” Canadian coach Glenn Hoag said. “The level of the tournament was good and the organizers did a great job. I think this event has a bright future.”

“The sixth place is not that bad considering that we finished above two of the teams we are going to compete against in the Central American and Caribbean Games,” Dominican coach Jacinto Campechano said. “Canada is a first division team and I think they should be playing for the gold medal but that is the way things are in sports.”
