United States edge Puerto Rico in quarterfinals duel

 

PUERTO ARISTA, Chiapas, May 19, 2012 – Women’s teams of Cuba, Mexico-1, Canada and United States advanced on Saturday to the semifinals of the Chiapas Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fourth stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit.

 

In Sunday’s scheduled, United States meet Canada while Cuba face off Mexico-1.

 

The most dramatic match was the one between United States and Puerto Rico, where Michelle Moriarty/Traci Weamer of the Stars and Stripes defeated the Puerto Ricans Dariam Acevedo/Tatiana Encarnacion 21-19, 21-19 in a battle enjoyed by almost 1,500 spectators in the stands of Puerto Arista stadium.

 

Vanessa Virgen/Martha Revuelta, of Mexico-1, advanced after winning over  Mayra Santacruz/Iztel Santoyo, of México-3, 21-14, 22-20, Cubans Niriam Sinal/Ion Canet beat Elki Phillip/Ayana Dyette of  Trinidad & Tobago  21-14, 21-14  and Caleigh Whitaker/Victoria Altomare, of Canada, defeated 21-17, 21-19 Samara Alemán/Judith Gatica, of México 2.
