Mayaguez Indians crowned in Puerto Rico
COROZAL, Puerto Rico, May 8, 2013- The Mayaguez Indians are the
new champions of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior Volleyball
League completing a sweep of Corozal Pinkin in the final series
on Tuesday.
After taking the first three matches of the best-of-seven series
by score of 3-1, the Indians were stretched to five sets (25-23,
25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12) in the fourth and last match.
It was the first title in the 13-year history of the franchise
and it came in their third attempt as they also visited the
final series in 2002 and 2005 losing to Caguas on both
occasions. For the 17-time champions Corozal it was their
seventh as runner-ups.
Shonda Cole finished with 26 points in leading the offense of
the winning side, followed by Danielle Scott-Arruda and Sarai
Alvarez each with 14 points while Yarimar Rosa added 11. For
Corozal, Kim Willoughby had 25 while Prisilla Rivera and Gina
Mambru contributed 22 and 20 respectively.
Cole, who totaled 80 points during the four matches, was elected
the series’ Most Valuable Player and received her trophy
presented by Nelson Perez, president of Puerto Rican National
Federation. |
