Mexico improves 2-0 and qualifies to Cali

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, August 12, 2021.- Mexico improved 2-0 at the Women’s U23 Pan American Cup beating Guatemala in straight sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-12) and qualified to the Junior Pan American Games to be held in Cali, Colombia.

Mexico (2-0) will meet with Puerto Rico (2-0) to decide pool B winner on Friday; both secured their way into semifinals and qualified to the 2021 Cali Junior Pan American Games.

Host Mexico was stronger and all players had a chance to perform overpowering Guatemala in every skill by huge margins, attacks (31-16), blocks (8-1) and serves (11-0). Both teams allowed 25 points on unforced errors.

Mexico’s top scorers were middle blocker Christian Daianne Alvarez with 9 points, including 4 aces, opposite Marian Aylin Ovalle and outside hitter Daniela Siller chipped in with 8 points apiece and Atenas Gutiérrez scored 7 points. Jimena María Castellanos led Guatemala with 7 points.

Christian Daianne Alvarez Mexican best scorer: “Mexico performed well; we have prepared to reach the final round. This is not the moment to lose concentration to have good results; we are a solid team, each one of us is important. Mexico has not shown its full potential”.

Luis Alberto León Coach of Mexico”: “We reached our first objective, now we’re aiming to reach the finals. Today everyone had a chance to perform but we finished with our starting line-up because it’s important to keep our rhythm and not make too many changes”.

Carmen Gómez setter of Guatemala: “We were aware of the difficulty of this match; our goal was to score as many points as possible. There’s little opportunity for us to face a high-level team like Mexico and for us it means learning and fighting for each ball”.

David Aldana Coach of Guatemala: “Mexico’s serves are high-level, the play with velocity and we aren’t used to such fast game. In my opinion my team did well the first two sets and the final part of set three. The team lost control in the third set because our reception was not organized and Mexico moved further away in the score”.
