Mexico scores first win ever against Argentina

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 9 2018 – Mexico claimed a one for the books victory over Argentina 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-20) in Pool C of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Monday.

It is the first time in history that Mexico gets a win over Argentina in the highest level. The winners improved to 1-1 win-loss record while Argentina fell to 0-2.

Samantha Bricio and Andrea Rangel each had 12 points for Mexico while Paula Nizetich and Julieta Lazcano scored 7 points apiece for Argentina.

Andrea Rangel, Captain of Mexico: We are very happy for this first victory over Argentina. The key for us was the concentration and the confidence in each other.

Paula Nizetich, Captain of Argentina: Mexico had a great game and we are playing below our level. There are no many things to comment. Just too many errors.

Ricardo Ponce, Coach of Mexico: We never thought about a 3-0 victory. We prepared the match to play against a strong rival with a lot of experience. Playing point by point was important to keep the focus.

Guillermo Orduna, Coach of Argentina: We are playing below our level. Yesterday for two sets we were close to it. We need to keep working and find out the reasons for this kind of performance. It looks to me like lack of confidence.
