Mexico win over Jamaica to open NORCECA U-19

HAVANA, Cuba, June, 24, 2016 – Mexican team began with victory over Jamaica 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-8) in the opening match of the NORCECA Boys U19 Championship at the Sports City Coliseum which is the biggest indoor arena in the country with capacity for 15,000 spectators.

In this match was evident the superiority of the Mexicans and their rivals’ interest of offering resistance, which happened only in some occasions, mainly in the second set.

Mexican coach Gabri Alarcón stated “it is always pretty good to start by winning. Although we had some difficulty as we tested all the players to make them avail themselves of this opportunity to familiarize with the court and the competition pressure. But it helps us to know which players we might use at the crucial times in the upcoming matches.

Captain, Jesus Flores expressed happily “the first thing we wanted was to adjust to the match demands and as a team, as well as to identify the opponent’s weaknesses to stop them”.

On the losing team, Steve Davis, Technical Director, considered “we met a team which plays very well organised and technically. We were able to improve our playing level in the second set, but I must confess the opposing squad is much experienced”.

Jovan Thomas, the Caribbean captain, recognised Mexico played much better “it was a match where we made our utmost trying to do it as good as possible.

This first match was officiated by Cinthya Hernández from Costa Rica as first referee and Devonie McLarty from United States of America as second referee. It is an example of the women’s refereeing development in NORCECA area.
