Mexico wins first match at NORCECA U20

FORT LAUDERDALE, United States, July 27, 2016.- Mexico won their first match at the NORCECA Women’s U-20 Continental Championship while beating French St. Martin 3-0 (25-7, 25-3, 25-8) at  Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Mexico had little resistance from the French St. Martin girls to improve their win-loss record 1-1 in group B. Mexico’s serves were unstoppable with a huge 24-2 advantage, as well as in spikes 26-1. Mexico benefited from 23 opponent errors and committed 14.

Opposite Kathya Garcia and middle blocker Yerania Gutierrez of Mexico were the top scorers with 13 and 10 points respectively. Karina Flores added 9 points for the winners.

French St. Martin (0-2) resumes preliminary round facing Puerto Rico (1-0) and Mexico (1-1) finishes against the host team (1-0).

Mexican captain Kathya Garcia explained that today the tried several variations, “we are glad with the win, we had the chance to make changes in our positions and gain more confidence for tomorrow’s match”.

Coach Jean-Luc Lezin of French St. Martin said “putting aside the loss, in general we did better than yesterday, but our team is having difficulties losing serves, we are missing reaction and our reception is too slow for this level of game”.
