Nicaragua wins NORCECA Group M Tournament
KINGSTON, Jamaica, June 2, 2013 – Nicaragua claimed the gold
medal at the NORCECA Second Round Group M Tournament, a zonal
qualification event towards the 2014 FIVB Women’s Volleyball
World Championship, by outdueling Jamaica/Nicaragua in a
five-setter 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10 in front of
hundreds of fans at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium on Sunday.
Despite the fact both teams had already booked spots to the
third and final round of NORCECA qualification tournaments
scheduled early next year they played hearts-out volleyball from
start to finish. Earlier on Sunday, Nicaragua had defeated the
home team in four sets.
“Our serves were the keys for us tonight and I also think we
were better than them at the net,” Nicaraguan Coach Rene
Quintana said. “We cleared a lot of hurdles like the injury of
our middle blocker Josafat (Diaz) in the morning match but the
young Maryuri (Torres) came in and did a good job.”
“I also have to give a lot of credit to the siblings Traña (Heidy
and Helen) who played great the whole tournament,” he added.
Quintana praised the efforts of the National Federation of
Nicaragua for what he called a “huge effort” and NORCECA
Confederation for its support.
On the other hand, Jamaica’s Gatasheu Bonner said he was glad
about qualifying even though they wanted to win the gold medal.
“We played much better than in the morning but I must admit that
on this day Nicaragua was better than us,” Bonner said.
