Nieves was close to the blocking record

DURANGO, Mexico, August 21, 2021 - Puerto Rican Pedro Nieves came close on Saturday of tying the all-time blocking record in a match within the NORCECA Men's Volleyball Continental Championship.

Nieves scored 7 blocks in Puerto Rico's victory over the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals, falling short of equaling the record of 8 set by Mexican Tomás Aguilera against Trinidad & Tobago in 2007 and then equaled by Canadian Rudy Verhoeff in 2013 versus Guatemala.

On the other hand, the 19 blocks that Puerto Rico totaled as a team in that match tied for the third most in a match in the history of the continental event.

The NORCECA Championship record is 22 by Canada against Guatemala in 2013 to break the mark of 21 set by the United States against Puerto Rico in 2011.

The information was offered from Santo Domingo by Roosevelt Comarazamy, director of press and communications of the NORCECA Confederation.
