St.
Lucia remains unbeaten to top Group A of ECVA finals
St. Johns, Antigua, November 24, 2012 - St. Lucia dropped a set
to underdogs Anguilla in a 3-1 victory (25-22; 24-26; 25-22 and
25 -15) en route to topping group A of the East Caribbean
Volleyball Association Senior Women Championship.
Anguilla really made St. Lucia sweat except in the final set
where they lost some steam.
Coach Florian Combie said that he was contented with the
progress of his team so far. "I am satisfied with the win as we
achieved one of our objectives and that was to qualify at the
top of the group and I am happy that team Anguilla gave us their
best shot. This gave me a chance to look at strategies to
overcome the problems encountered," he said.
On the contrary coach Jason Liburd of Anguilla was satisfied but
not pleased.
We played progressively better from game to game and tonight we
played really well but St. Lucia was simply better than us. the
talent was always there and so I am not pleased that we probably
won't have a chance to go on in the tournament. However I now
know that I can push them even harder.
Meanwhile Antigua/Barbuda treated their home fans to some
excitement with a come from behind 3-1 victory
(24-26;25-21;25-18 and 25-15) over the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Needing only to avoid heavy defeat the Antiguans executed well
on the night to capture runner up place in group A and the right
to play against Dominica to earn a final berth.
Captain Patty Romney of the BVI said that they only had
themselves to blame. "Our passing game fell away rapidly and as
a result the opponents were given too many free balls that they
took advantage of," she said.
Coach Esron Gittens of Antigua saw it differently. "It was our
ability to execute just what we planned that brought home
victory tonight. Even though we fell behind I was confident that
he girls knew what to do to recover," he reported. |
