Barbados beat Aruba in opening match
KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 29, 2012. - Barbados beat Aruba 3-0
(25-10, 25-15, 25-7) in the opening match of the
NORCECA Group E First Round Qualification Tournament of the FIVB
2014 Women’s World Championship.
The straight sets win in 58 minutes sees Barbados to take
command of the tournament from the beginning to secure one of
the three spots available for next year’s round.
With 19 points, Shari Mathews and with 11 points Rhe-Ann Niles
topped Barbados’ scorers. Jackie Toussaint was the best for
Aruba with 6 points.
Thonya Joseph captain for the winning team said “we want to take
one match at a time and improve with each one. I believe we did
pretty well to be our first match in the tournament and we were
unsure of what to expect from Aruba.”
“Our team is very young and this is our first time ever in an
international tournament” said captain for Aruba, Jackie
Toussaint. “Nervousness took control of us and we will try to do
better” she added.
Barbados’ coach, Andrew Brathwaite indicated “we decided to
focus on our side because we have never seen Aruba play. This
match gave us the chance to try different combinations thinking
ahead in the tournament”. He finished congratulating Aruba and
to keep practicing as it’s just their beginning.
“We definitely need to improve and Barbados took advantage of
the numerous errors in our receiving, now we’ll put our mind on
the next match” expressed Igmar Ogenia Aruba’s coach. |
