Aruba books ticket to second round WCH qualifier
KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 30, 2012. - Aruba won the bronze
medal of the NORCECA E First Round qualification tournament to
the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship following their 3-0
(25-18, 25-11, 25-13) victory over Cayman Islands.
Aruba had a slow beginning but was determined to book the last
spot available for the next round of competitions in 2013
gaining control one point at a time. Earlier they had beaten
Cayman Islands led by Jackie Toussaint who once again took her
team to finish in third place.
Aruba´s numbers showed advantage 7-1 in the blocking category
and a big difference by 14-4 in serving points. Jackie Toussaint
with 14 points topped Aruba’s scorers. Chante Smith-Johnson
finished with 9 points for Cayman Islands.
“They changed their strategy and it wasn’t easy defeating them
like we did in the morning. We united as a team to qualify which
makes me proud of my teammates” expressed with tears Jackie
Toussaint.
Anita Lansdell said “we’ve improved during the tournament so we
must keep working on the basics”.
Igmar Ogenia coach of Aruba first wanted to thank his team
“their dedication and sacrifice showed its results today; this
match was slower than the first because Cayman Islands was
better but in the end we reached our goal.”
Cayman Islands’ coach, Keith Higgins indicated “the team is very
young and tonight we got closer to what I expected from the
period of time that we’ve been training”. |
