Barbados starts with victory over Aruba
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, October 6, 2012.- Barbados
started the NORCECA Group E Men’s 2014 FIVB World Championship
with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-14) victory over Aruba.
Barbados performed firmly as expected. Shawn Simpson produced 15
points for the winners, while Aruba was led by Fransua Angela
with 8 points. Barbados made the difference with a 10-3 margin
in aces.
Barbados’ captain Jamaal Nedd commended the strong chemistry of
the team as the key for success. “We know each other well even
if we normally don’t have the chance to play together, only for
our teams back home which keeps us sharp and our individual
strengths add up,” he said.
Aruba’s captain, Eargenell De Cuba said: “We had some problems
with our setter and that made things difficult for us; normally
I am a setter so that was why we changed in the second set. We
hope to learn from our mistakes and play hard for our country”.
Coach of Barbados, Ludger Niles indicated: “We know that it was
important to start with a victory, we are a strong unit. I was
able to give all my players a chance to play, which I believe
that early in a tournament like this one gives us confidence”.
“My players were nervous and our setter didn’t make his job,
that was why I had to adjust in the second set but that meant to
lose an attack. We have the difficulty of only practicing
without preparation matches for this kind of tournament which in
the end makes the difference” said John Van Der Lee, Coach of
Aruba.
