USA’s Babcock and Treamer take women’s title in St Lucia

 

GROS ISLET, St Lucia, October 28, 2012 – The USA team of Kathryn Babcock and Tracilyn Weamer recovered from losing the first set and went on to edge Costa Rica’s Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro in a thrilling gold-medal match of the St Lucia Beach Volleyball Tournament, the ninth stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit at Pigeon Point Beach on Sunday.

 

The American pair lost their first set of the weekend to the hands of the feisty Costa Rican duo but bounced back to take the title with a 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-12) effort that lasted exactly 60 minutes.

 

Playing together with Weamer for the first time, Babcock was very happy about the outcome which she celebrated with enthusiasm.

 

“We started to practice just a couple of weeks ago,” Babcock said.

“This is our first tournament playing together.”

 

“It’s my first time in a Norceca’s event representing USA,” she added. “This make me feel very proud and I’m very happy to be here.”

“This is my third Norceca’s tournament,” Weamer commented. “It is fantastic, to finish on top is really amazing,”

 

Babcock/Weamer reached the gold-medal contest by winning 2-0 (21-15, 21-12) over Canada’s Kristina Vlcek and Victoria Cowley. On the other hand, Morales/Alfaro defeated Ayana Dyette and Elki Phillip of Trinidad and Tobago-A by score of 2-0 (21-10, 21-9).

 

Vlcek/Cowley took home the bronze medal after a 2-0 (26-24, 21-14) victory over Dyette/Phillip.

 

Women’s results of Sunday: Semifinals: CRC d TRI-A 2-0 (21-10, 21-9), USA d CAN 2-0 (21-15, 21-12). Bronze medal: CAN d TRI-A 2-0 (26-24, 21-14). Gold medal: USA d CRC 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-12).
