Peru to warm up in Dominican Republic

LIMA, Peru, September 2, 2015 – The Peruvian National Team will play several training games against the Dominican Republic in preparation for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship to be held in Puerto Rico from September 11 to 19.

The team will arrive in the Dominican Republic on Thursday and will stay there before travelling to the nearby Puerto Rico.

Natalia Málaga, coach of the Peruvian side said the team is almost the same that competed and finished in fourth place at the U18 World Championship two years ago.

“This tournament will serve as a gauge to see how much we have grown during that period,” Málaga said. “Taking part in the U23 World Championship was part of our training process and we know this new competition will be a tough one but we have been working and improving day after day.”

Ángela Leyva, captain of the team, said this will be “an opportunity to show our growth since our last world championship and now we go with better preparation and confident. We are 100 percent committed to achieve better results.”

Besides Leyva the team to train in Dominican Republic includes Maguilaura Frías, Coraima Gómez, Rosa Valiente, Nair Canessa, Shiamara Almeida and Cristina Cuba as spikers,  Yomira Villacorta and Dayana Rojas as setters, and the libero Nicole Abreu.

They will be joined in Puerto Rico by Diana de la Pe;a and Katherine Regalado who are currently playing with the senior team at the FIVB Women’s World Cup in Japan.

At the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship, Peru will compete in Pool B along with teams from Serbia, China and Mexico.
