Ponce and Caguas are 1-2 in Puerto Rican League

 

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, March 10, 2014 – Caguas took sole possession of second place in the Puerto Rico Women’s Superior League with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) victory over Mayaguez at Hector Sola Bezares Gym on Sunday.

 

Caguas improved to a 9-4 win-loss record and 27 points, trailing Ponce who is atop of the standings with a 10-3 mark and 29 points.

 

Genesis Collazo and Falyn Fonoimoana each registered 18 points, in the victory, followed by Alexandra Oquendo with 11, including four blocks. Shonda Cole and Sarai Alvarez led Mayaguez with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

 

In the other match of Sunday’s action, Humacao stopped Guaynabo 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 13-25, 22-25, 15-7) at Emilio Huyke Gym.

 

Kim Willoughby had 30 points for the winners followed by Jekaterina Stepanova and Shirley Ferrer with 19 and 16 points, respectively. Megan Ganzer had 18 points in the losing cause.

 

In Saturday’s action, Ponce beat Juncos 25-21, 25-21, 25-12 and Catano downed Carolina 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.

 

The standings after the weekend’s matches are as follows:

Ponce (10-3, 29), Caguas (9-4, 27), Carolina (8-5, 26), Catano (5-8, 18), Humacao (6-7, 17), Mayaguez (6-7, 16), Juncos (4-9, 12), Guaynabo (4-9, 11).
