Ponce and Caguas on fast track in Puerto Rico

 

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, April 23, 2014 – Ponce and Caguas both improved to 2-0 in the semifinal phase of the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League.

 

Nicole Fawcett and Airial Salvo scored 22 and 17 points, respectively, in leading Ponce to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-13, 25-27, 25-16) over Mayaguez in “Semifinals A” on Monday.

 

Legna Hernandez contributed 11 points in the victory as Ponce held a 7-2 advantage in aces and edged 10-9 in the blocking category.

 

Shonda Cole finished with a match-high 26 points for Mayaguez while Diana Copenhagen had 16 points in the loss. Sarai Alvarez charted 9 tallies.

 

In the “Semifinals B” on Tuesday, Caguas outdueled a high spirited Carolina in a come-from-behind victory 27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 15-9 at Mario Morales Pavilion of Guaynabo.

 

Falyn Fonoimoana, Stepahnie Enright and Karina Ocasio each contributed 18 points to the victory while Alexandra Oquendo added 13, including five of the 16 blocks scored by the winners.

 

Stephanie Niemer ended with a match-high 23 points for Carolina. Vanessa Velez, Katherine Harms and Odemaris Diaz tallied 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively.
