Ponce and Caguas one win away from the finals

 

PONCE, Puerto Rico, April 25, 2014 – Ponce and Caguas are on the brink of the final series of the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League following their third consecutive victories over Mayaguez and Carolina, respectively.

 

The third match of the best-of-seven “Semifinals A” was a fiery five-set battle won by Ponce 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12 on Wednesday.

 

Ponce has not visited a league’s final series since 1991, when they won their third national title.

 

Nicole Fawcett topped Ponce with 29 points followed by Airial Salvo and Legna Hernandez who contributed 19 points apiece. Rookie of the Year Janeliss Torres added 11 points, including five blocks.

 

Diane Copenhagen and Shonda Cole finished with 25 and 24 points, respectively, in the loss.

 

In the third match of the “Semifinals B”, Caguas beat Carolina 25-12, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18 on Thursday.

 

Falyn Fonoimoana led Caguas with 22 points followed by Stephanie Enright and Karina Ocasio with 19 points apiece. Alexandra Oquendo added 10.

 

Stephanie Niemer, Vanessa Vélez and Katherine Harms each had 12 points in the loss.
