Ponce and Carolina share top place in Puerto Rico

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 3, 2014 – Ponce and Carolina are tied in first place of the Puerto Rican Women’s Volleyball Superior League as both teams have 23 points following Sunday’s action where the two teams suffered five-set losses.

 

Shonda Cole scored 23 points while Diane Copenhagen and Sarai Álvarez added 20 and 18, respectively, in the victory of Mayaguez over Ponce despite the 25-point performance by Airial Salvo in the losing cause.

 

Playing at home, Mayaguez bounced back from losing the first two sets to take the victory 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9.

 

In the other match of Sunday, Guaynabo defeated Carolina 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 10-25, 15-9 with Dulce Tellez as the winners’ best scorer with 19 points.  Stephanie Niemer had 24 points for the defeated side.

 

Following Sunday’s action, Ponce and Carolina both have 23 points but the former shows a better set-ratio. Ponce has an 8-3 win-loss record (six 3-0 and 3-1 victories valid for 18 points, two 3-2 wins for 4 points and one 2-3 loss which counts for 1 point) while Carolina sits at 7-4 (seven 3-1 victories and two 2-3 defeats).

 

In the individual standings, there is a close race going on for the scoring title as Falyn Moinomoana of Caguas leas with 187 points followed by Katherine Harms of Ponce with 182 and Kim Willoughby of Humacao with 178.
