Puerto Rican Aury Cruz ties her own record of points

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 28, 2015 – Puerto Rican star player Aury Cruz tied her own record of most points scored in a single match at the NORCECA Volleyball Women’s Continental Championship on Sunday.

Cruz logged 32 points in the five-set loss of Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 15-13) in the opening day of the competition at Bicentenario Auditorium of Morelia, Mexico.

Roosevelt Comarazamy, NORCECA Communication Director, made the announcement of the feat accomplished by the Puerto Rican player.

The veteran Cruz matched the 32 points she scored, coincidentally, six years earlier and also in a five-set loss to the Dominican Republic 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 32-30, 15-8) in the gold medal match at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum of Bayamon, Puerto Rico on September 27 of 2009.

Comarazamy informed that Cruz is the only player in the history of the competition, since the rally-point system was established, to surpass the 30-point plateau in a single match. Next in the all-time list are Canadian Sarah Pavan and Trinidadian Kelly-Anne Billingy with 29 and Mexican Andrea Rangel with 28.

It is the sixth time Cruz has scored at least 20 points in a single match at a NORCECA Continental Championship, one behind the seven by Dominican Bethania De la Cruz.
