Puerto Rico Controls Canada in Pool K of WGP

 

   

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico, July 3, 2015 – Puerto Rico recorded a home victory with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-10, 24-26, 25-14) win over Canada in Pool K of FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on Friday. 

Puerto Rico outscored Canada in attack 56-33 and serve 6-0, but Canada showed better net defense with a 12-6 margin in blocks. 


Sheila Ocasio and Aurea Cruz led Puerto Rico with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Canada’s Tabitha Love had 13 and Shanice Marcelle scored 11 points.

 

In Group 3, Cuba overcame Kazakhstan 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) in a Pool P match in Trujillo, Peru on Friday.

 

Cuba won the spiking competition 43-27, had a superior block (5-4) and dominated service (12-2).

 

Cuba’s Melissa Vargas was the top scorer in the match with 23 points, including five aces, while teammate Jennifer Alvarez contributed 16 points with seven aces.

 

Also in Group 3, defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) in Cheraga, Argelia. Mercy Moin topped the charts with 17 points for Kenya. Mexico’s top scorer was Dulce Carranza, who managed 15 points for her team.
