Puerto Rico books historic triumph in World League

 

CAROLINA, Puerto Rico, June 7, 2014 – Puerto Rico made history at home, winning their first ever World League match after beating Slovakia in five sets (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10) on Saturday in a full-packed crowd at Guillermo Angulo Coliseum in Pool G of the FIVB Volleyball World League.

 

Maurice Torres was the top offensive contributor to the win by scoring 24 points, including four blocks. Fernando Morales and Ezequiel Cruz finished with 12 and 11, respectively.

 

Lubos Kostolani registered 22 points for Slovakia while Matej Patak added 18 in the losing effort.

 

In the other match of Pool G, China defeated Spain in straight sets (31-29, 25-18, 25-13) relying on fast attacks and excellent defensive skills.

 

China’s Zhi Yuan was the game’s top scorer with 17 points. Francisco Ruiz got 12 points for Spain.
