Quesada and Peña in semifinals at Ocho Rios

OCHO RIOS, Jamaica, June 24, 2017 – Cubans Daisel Quesada and Karell Peña, winners of the first two tournaments of the year, are among the semifinalists of the Ocho Rios Beach Volleyball Tournament, the third stop of the 2017 NORCECA Circuit.

Quesada/Peña finished undefeated in Pool B after beating the USA-A team of Miles Evans and William Kolinske 2-0 (21-13, 21-18) and advanced to a semifinal match against Costa Rica’s Bryan Monge and Richard Smith when Mexico’s Josué Gaxiola and José Rubio forfeited their quarterfinals contest.

Monge and Smith finished Pool A with a 2-1 record after a 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) victory over Jamaica’s Mark Lewis and Christopher Walters and then scored a surprising 2-1 (21-16, 15-21, 15-12) win over Jon Mesko and Skylar del Sol of USA-B in the quarterfinals.

The other semifinals will see Canada’s Aaron Nusbaum and Josh Binstock against Americans Evans and Kolinske.

Nusbaum/Binstock finished Pool A with a 3-0 mark after a 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) over Dominican Republic’s William Sanchez and Alex Medina and then edged compatriots Sergey Grabovsky and Liam Kopp 2-1 (21-18, 19-21, 15-13) in the quarterfinals.

Evans and Kolinske advanced to the semifinals after prevailing in a fantastic duel with Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia 2-1 (19-21, 22-20, 19-17) in one hour.

Quarterfinals: CAN-A d CAN-B 2-1 (21-18, 19-21, 15-12), USA-A d GUA 2-1 (19-21, 22-20, 19-17), CRC d USA-B 2-1 (21-16, 15-21, 15-12), CUB d MEX 2-0 (21-0, 21-0).
