Sainz MVP of NORCECA Women’s Playoff

 

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, July 20, 2014 - Lizbeth Sainz was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the NORCECA Playoff Volleyball Tournament Sunday night after leading Mexico past Trinidad and Tobago.

 

Mexico won the round-robin tournament with the victory to qualify for the Women’s World Championships in Italy from September 23-October 12.

 

Sainz, who was the leading scorer in the final match with 16 points, was voted Best Outside Spiker and also collected the prestigious MVP prize during the closing ceremony.

 

As their teams had done in the tournament by finishing first and second, players from Mexico and T&T dominated the individual awards by capturing five apiece of the 12 prizes.

 

Also picking up awards for the champions were Lizbeth Lopez (Best Receiver), Claudia Resendiz (Best Setter) and captain Andrea Rangel, who was voted Best Opposite Hitter.

 

Trinidad & Tobago’s Sinead Jack and Jalicia Ross-Kydd were named Best Blockers, while captain Kelly Billingy was the Best Server and Channon Thompson, the Best Scorer and one of the two Best Outside Spikers.

 

Marcela Araya, from third-placed Costa Rica, was voted Best Libero and Best Digger.

 

No players from Nicaragua and Panama, the teams which occupied the final two positions, respectively, received individual awards.
