Dominican Republic sweep Canada

Lima, Peru, September 3, 2012 – Dominican Republic brushed aside Canada in consecutive frames (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) in their first match of Pool B in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum on Monday.

The Dominicans held an overwhelming advantage of 40-18 in attacks and committed 18 errors to 25 by the Canadians. The winners outblocked their rivals 8-6 while the defeated side was better in service aces 5-2.

Yonkaira Peña and Lisvel Eve registered 17 and 14 points respectively as the top scorers of the winning side. Jeoselyna Rodriguez contributed 8 points and Candida Arias added six.

Canada’s Royale Richardson and Sophie Carpentier each scored six points.

“For most of my players this is their first international experience and today we played against a very talented team like Dominican Republic, very good physical with great jumping ability,” Canada’s coach Ryan Hofer commented. “It is a learning process for us.”

“I think we played a little bit below our best,” Dominican Republic’s coach Marcos Kwiek said. “The change of weather has affected some of us since we are coming from a very hot place. Our goal for the next two matches is to continue winning and minimize our errors.”
