Peru defeats Dominican Republic in straight sets

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico, September 21st 2010.—  Peru defeated Dominican Republic in straight sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-15) in the first match of the Final Four Women’s Championship.

The rematch of the 2010 Women’s Pan American Cup, won by the Dominicans, had a different start at the Chiapas Polyforum, after the South Americans took advantage in the first set.

The Caribbean ladies had a few problems on their service, but tried to recover with their attack. However, the peruvian reception was key to solve and dominate the ball.

Daian Soto and Leyla Chihuan finished as the best scorers for Peru with 13 and 12 points each, while Lisvel Eve Mejia and Sidalka Nuñez tallied 6 each one for the Dominican Side.

“We played a great match against a great team but not at our level, anyway we are in a very important process of preparation to the World Championship”, said Karla Echenique, the Dominican captain.

“I am not so happy because We did not win, this was a tough match, We have just returned from the Grand Prix, while Peru played in a preparation tour against Canada”, coach Kwiek said.

“This is not a revenge, everybody say so, but games are different every time, Dominican Republic is a great team and We also have to be prepared for the World champioship”, peruvian captain Leyla Chihuan said.

For Edwin Jimenez, the asistan coach of Peru, this victory was a good parameter in that preparation. “We respect the quality of all participants and this tournament will help us a lot for the next stage, because We expect to be between the eight best nations of the World”.
