Sitting Volleyball included in Coaches Course in Jamaica

 

KINGSTON, Jamaica, November 27, 2017- The FIVB Level 1 Coaches Course which was held by the Jamaica Volleyball Association in conjunction with its governing body, FIVB, commenced on November 24, 2017 at the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports, with 14 persons participating.

 

The course was conducted by Level 4 FIVB Instructor, John Kessel, who stated that he was “glad to share best practices and ideas’, with the group. Mr. Kessel is also the Director of Sport Development with USA Volleyball, Secretary of the NORCECA Development Commission and Director of Development for World ParaVolley.

 

With the emphasis on development, Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball were also components of the course.  Mr. Kessel also conducted training sessions with students at GC Foster College, and Physical Education Teachers in Westmoreland. 

 

Prior to departing the island on November 25, Mr. Kessel attended the 14th staging of the Wolmer’s Volleyfest.

 

The Closing Ceremony took place on November 24, with the President of the Jamaica Olympic Association, Christopher Samuda, handing out the certificates.  With the thrust of the JaVA to increase the number of children playing volleyball, General Secretary, Jackie Cowan, urged the participants to start a grassroots programme in their schools and or communities, using their recently acquired skills.  Each participant received youth volleyballs to start the process.

 

With its continuing partnership, JaVA awarded scholarships to two students of GC Foster College to attend the course.  A donation of 20 volleyballs were also made to the College for facilitating the training of the JaVA’s National Teams.
