South Korea edges Dominican Republic in five sets

TOKYO, Japan, July 29, 2021 – South Korea defeated Dominican Republic 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12) in a match between winless teams in Pool A of the women’s volleyball tournament at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Thursday.

The South Koreans now have a 1-2 record, while the Dominicans sank to 0-3.

Kim Jeon Koung recorded 20 points, including three blocks and one ace, to spearhead the attack of the Asian side. Park Jeongah and Kim Heejin each contributed 16 points in the victory.

Brayelin Martinez led Dominican Republic with 20 points, followed by Yonkaira Peña and Jineiry Martinez with 16 and 13, respectively. Prisilla Rivera finished with 9 points.

The match was plagued by failures from both sides as each team gave away 29 points via errors.

The Dominicans next play against Kenya and host Japan forced to win both matches to advance to the next round of the tournament.
