St. Eustatius takes the bronze medal in ECVA U20

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius, July 8, 2018 -  St. Eustatius quickly suppressed the intentions of their opponents, the British Virgin Islands, after they lost the first set, in a four set thriller.  The scores for the game were 3:1 (22- 25, 25- 15, 25-20, 25- 16) in favour of St. Eustatius.  “Statia” realizing their chances of securing the bronze medal was slipping away, began pushing the ball into the deeper parts of the court.

The young ladies blocked and passed with renewed fervor.  Leading the St. Eustatius charge was Chanel Schmidt as she scored some twelve (12) points.  She was ably assisted by Captain Millennia Bennett who contributed eight (8) points.

The British Virgin Islands seemed revived as their cadence was quick and their smiles were wide. Unfortunately the heat of St. Eustatius slowly sapped their energy over the course of four sets.  This effectively snuffed out their dreams of winning the bronze medal. The IVB’s lead scorers were Captain Shauliqua Fahie who scored six (6) points and Xiomara Malone, who scored five (5) points.

Coach Spanner of ST. Eustatius was thrilled to see his team show what they are capable of.  He further opined there is more work to be done as certain areas need to be improved. However, he is of the view his team will be a force to reckon with in the future.  His opposite number, Coach Potter, indicated his team needs more work to refine the product here on display.  He feels with more training and games, the ladies will cause trouble for some teams later on.
