St. Martin defeats St. Kitts in 4 sets

ST JOHNS, Antigua, August 17, 2018 – St. Marten emerged as 3-1  winners  when they played against St. Kitts/Nevis on Day 2 of the ECVA Senior Women Competition.

St. Martin took the first set but a strong effort from St. Kitts/Nevis leveled the score at one all.  Following that the St. Kitts/Nevis effort fizzled out and St. Martin took the game with scores of 25 -15, 22-25, 25 -19 and 25 -22.

It was the second loss for St. Kitts /Nevis leaving them winless in group play and for St. Martin they were on course according to their objectives

Coach Shawn Seabrookes of St. Kitts/Nevis was still upbeat after the loss.  “I can stand here and say that I am extremely proud of my girls, we have not won a game as yet but all is not lost in this competition. Knowing that our physical conditioning wasn’t the best prior to this tournament I believe it was just fatigue setting in. Added to that we have to find a way to finish out attack with a decisive point. We gave away far too many free balls. Notwithstanding that I think the #11 (Jacqueline Hodge) and # 4 (Valerie Damaseau) were excellent for St. Martin”, he concluded.

Coach of the St. Martin team concurred with Seabrookes. “Jaqueline is definitely a dominant player. She doesn’t give up and gets into good positions to control the center court. It is rather obvious that she is our “go to” player but she too demands the ball and never gives up. On a team level our defense really gave us the edge in this game”, he recounted.

Hodge ended the game with 27 points. 17 of those were spikes, 6 blocks and 4 aces. Damaseau was the side kick to Hodge with 11 points of her own.

Meanwhile on the losing side Shanicia Dyer recorded 15 points to lead her teammates. Overall St. Martin enjoyed the advantage in Spikes 42-22, led in Blocks 10 -1 and also in Serves 10-4.

St. Martin and Antigua have a meeting set for the curtains game on the 17th while St. Kitts/Nevis awaits crisscross pool play in the quarterfinals.
