Stapleton, Niles leads Barbados boys to gold

 

TACARIGUA, TRINIDAD, DECEMBER 8, 2013: Andriy Stapleton and Adam Niles combined for 26 points as Barbados captured its second Caribbean Zone Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Youth (Under-18) Championship crown with a straight sets defeat of host T&T (25-20, 25-14, 25-15) at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena.

 

Stapleton, the tournament's "Most Valuable Player" and his team captain, ended with 16 points while Niles got ten for the Barbadians who also won the title in T&T in 2007  followed by a silver medal finish in Curacao three years later and third last year in US Virgin Islands.

 

Overall it was solid performance from Barbados which outgunned T&T on spikes, 29-23 and blocks, 5-2 and also committed less errors, 20 to its opponent, 37.

 

For T&T, which secured its best ever finish, captain Marlon Phillip, the best scorer overall had a match high 18 points in the loss.

 

Stapleton also walked off with three other awards, the "Best Spiker", "Best Server" and "Best Digger" while his team-mate Mark Blake was named "Best Blocker".

 

The other awards were snapped up by T&T with Phillip, the "Best Receiver" and "Best Scorer"; Marcus Moore, "Best Setter" and Marley Davidson "Best Libero".
