Three NORCECA girls teams advance to first round in Porto

PORTO, Portugal, August 1, 2014 – Puerto Ricans Valeria Cajigas and Lina Bernier, Mexicans Stephanie Burnside and Yesenia Castro and USA’s Susannah Muno and Christian Jones advanced to the first round of the U19 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship after compiling 3-2 win-loss records at the end of Pool Play on Friday morning.

Cajigas/Bernier advanced with a 23-21, 21-14 victory over Bell/Kendall of Australia, while Burnside/Castro edged China’s J.X. Wang and Yuan Lvwen 27-25, 21-18.

Muno/Jones, who arrived with a 3-1 mark, lost their match in three sets (12-21, 21-19, 15-12) to Adamcikova/Valkova of Czech Republic.

Also on Friday morning, Skye Mondesir and Dala Noel of St Lucia lost 21-5, 21-14 to Russians Mastikova/Novikova and finished winless in five outings.

In first round later on Friday, Cajigas/Bernier meet Udovenko/Lysenko of Ukraine, Burnside/Castro play Welsch/Bieneck of Germany, while Muno/Jones go against Shalayeuskaya/Siakretava of Belorussia.
