Two American women teams advance undefeated

TOKYO, Japan, July 31, 2021 – Canadians Sarah Pavan and Melisa Humana-Paredes and the two American teams of April Ross and Alix Klineman and Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil advanced to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Women’ Beach Volleyball Tournament as winners of their respective pools with undefeated 3-0 records.

Pavan/Humana sealed their ticket to the main draw with a 21-13, 24-22 victory over Switzerland’s Anouk

Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich in Pool A. Ross/Klineman advanced with a well-fought 2-1 (20-22, 21-17, 15-5) victory over Netherlands’ Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink in Pool B.

In Pool D, Claes and Sponcil beat Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Khadambi of Kenya 21-8, 21-6 and then prevailed against Brazilians Ana Patricia Ramos and Rebecca Barbosa 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-11).

In Pool C, Canada’s Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson finished at 1-2 after losing to Brazil’s Agatha Bernardczuk and Eduarda -Duda- Lisboa 21-18, 21-18.

In Pool E, Cubans Lidy Echeverria and Leila Martinez lost to Russia’s Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina 21-16, 21-11 before defeating Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth 21-16, 21-16. Echeverría/Martínez advanced to the main draw with a “lucky losers” win over Netherlands’ Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon 21-17, 21-17.
