USA and Brazil triumphed at Toronto Pan Am Games

 

   

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, December 2, 2015 – USA and Argentina claimed the women’s and men’s volleyball gold medals, respectively, at the Pan American Games held in Toronto, Canada in July.

 

Big crowds enjoyed the two-week action at the Exhibition Centre with both tournaments played at the same time with alternate days in the schedule.

 

United States won the women’s gold medal by defeating Brazil in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 28-26). Nicole Fawcett finished with 21 points as the most prolific scorer for the winners.

 

It was the second gold medal for the United States women in the history of the Pan American Games with the other also in Canada in 1967 when the games took place in Winnipeg.

 

The Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21) to win the bronze medal. It is the second medal in the Pan American Games volleyball history for the women’s Dominican team who won the gold at home in Santo Domingo in 2003.

 

Argentina won the men’s volleyball gold medal with a terrific comeback to outduel Brazil 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8). Facundo Conte led the winners with 23 points.

 

The Argentineans claimed their second gold medal in the history of the Games adding to the one conquered at home in 1995 when the event took place in Mar del Plata.

 

En route to their championship, the Argentineans snapped the streak of two titles in row by Brazil winners in Rio de Janeiro (2007) and Guadalajara, Mexico (2011).

 

Hosts Canada defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-11, 25-12, 23-25, 25-18) in the match for the men’s bronze medal

 

Carli Lloyd of the United States was named the Most Valuable Player of the women’s tournament while Argentina’s Facundo Conte won the honors in the men’s event.
